The sunshine-filled days of summer are nearly upon us, which means we’ll be dusting off our patio furniture, tending to our gardens, and hosting afternoon barbecues. For many of us, the arrival of the warmest months of the year means we’ll be spending much more time outdoors, inviting friends onto our patios, decks and entertaining terraces. If your outdoor living space could use an extra touch this season, look no further than a few of our favorite, simple decorating tips, courtesy of HGTV.
It’s All About the Layers
There are more options for outdoor living décor now than there ever have been, which includes some of the comforts we typically associate with the indoors, like decorative rugs and throw pillows. These are a simple way to add a sense of comfort to your space, which will increase ten-fold with the addition of the ever-popular patio string lights and a touch of greenery. For privacy and a sense of whimsy, try hanging curtains around the space.
A Seat for Everyone
A thoughtful host or hostess ensures that each guest has a comfortable place to sit, but that can prove difficult during larger gatherings. HGTV recommends investing in floor pillows and a pouf, to “add extra seating and color without taking up a lot of room.” These items will not only make your guests feel at home, but they are easy to store and pull out when needed. When considering new furniture purchases, put relaxation at the forefront, with lounge chairs or hammocks that will allow you to unwind after a long day.
Dine Alfresco
Outdoor kitchens are a growing trend in home design, but even homes that don’t have a dedicated culinary space en plein air can craft a perfect dining area for alfresco meals. If space is a constraint, HGTV recommends bistro tables, which often fold for easy storage and don’t require much room. If you are graced with a large palette to work with, then look at a sturdier table that will accommodate several guests for twilight dinners and parties. A bonus tip: invest in a bar cart, to expertly craft cocktails in your outdoor living space.
