2017 Design Trends

With 2017 off to a tremendous start, predictions are coming in for the hottest interior design trends of the year. I have compiled a list of some of my favorite design trends for 2017.

Home Automation

As we evolve forward in the manner in which we interact with the spaces, home automation has become a hot topic. From home assistants, such as Amazon’s Alexa to Nest’s learning thermostat, there are a wide range of products available to streamline and control your home environment with the touch of a button.

NEXUS is an highly anticipated project that is slated to join the Seattle Skyline as one of the city’s first high tech, high rises and the developers have integrated features such as Home automation for climate, lighting, entertainment, security & privacy, an eco-scoreboard for energy and utility consumption, booking of in-building amenities (i.e. private dining) and scheduling of classes (i.e. yoga), notification of package acceptance with options to permit access to the residence, and much more through an app that has been developed for the 41 story tower.

Muted Colors

Vogue has stated that a top design trend for 2017 will be the revival of neutral colors, including whites, beiges, pale grays. This trend will depart from the commonplace practice of utilizing bold and vibrant colors within the home to create a more refined and calm space.

Energy Conservation

With home automation on the rise, energy conservation will also be a top trend for 2017, especially in the Pacific Northwest. There are many ways to conserve energy within the home and cut down on bills; from buying a dryer with a moisture sensor that turns off when the clothes are dry, to switching to compact fluorescent light bulbs which can reduce energy usage by up to 75%; and even installing room occupancy sensors to ensure that room are only lit when needed.

Pantone’s Color of the Year: Greenery

Pantone, the world-renowned authority on color and provider of color systems and leading technology for the selection and accurate communication of color across a variety of industries, has announced that the color of the year is “Greenery.”

This color is very bold and I know not everyone will be ready to incorporate this color literally. So, I suggest adding green to your home in the form of house plants which can bring life into a space as well as the added benefits reducing carbon dioxide levels, increasing humidity, reducing certain pollutants, reducing airborne dust levels, and keeping the air temperature down.

Artisan-Crafted Furniture

When finding and curating the perfect home, many people focus on creating a seamless ambiance; and a major part of this process is finding the right furniture. According to Vogue, this year’s trend of artisan crafted furniture will put an emphasis on furniture as a long lasting, well-built investment. Whether you are looking for modern or mid-century, there are many resources available, online and in-store, in the greater Seattle region.

Sleek and Modern Over Oversized Furniture

Swapping out oversized furniture for items that are sleeker and more modern presents a more minimalistic impression within a space while allowing extra room for important features such as extra storage. With so many companies moving towards customizable furniture options, it’s never been easier to choose a couch, chair, or dining room table that’s the right size for your space. Playing into the trend of artisan-crafted furniture, there has never been a better time to update your space to your exact specifications.

Mixing Textures

Mixing materials seems to be the biggest movement in home goods and furniture for 2017. Dramatic pieces made from a mix of metal, brass, marble, and wood are popping up everywhere and can add to, or completely change, the ambiance of a room. One of the hottest combinations is marble and brass. Brass was a trend that started in fashion (as many home trends often do) and an unpopular finish for many years. Now, suddenly a surge of designers are now offering many different facets of brass colored fixtures in bathrooms and kitchens. Choose options that are more coppery to add warmth to your neutral colored spaces.
